The local pub on Moorland Road that has not been converted into anything else. Proper bar, no gastro affectations, food that does what it says. Popular with University of Bath students and the surrounding professional residents in roughly equal measure. The garden is active in summer. The quiz night draws a regular crowd mid-week. Worth noting: it is attached to a live music venue — the Chicken — which means Friday and Saturday evenings are livelier than the pub alone suggests.

The best coffee within reach of Oldfield Park, a 12-minute walk east along the canal towpath or 15 minutes via Wells Road. Speciality filter and espresso; the counter seating is designed for working or early-morning focused drinking. No power sockets at the counter. The walk via the towpath is the right approach.

Consistently the best speciality coffee in Bath, 15 minutes from Oldfield Park via Wells Road and Green Street. Counter seating where working is expected and acceptable. Tiny space — it fills from nine. The beans change seasonally and the staff know what they are doing. No hot food. The reason Oldfield Park residents walk into the city centre for coffee.

Vietnamese cooking on St James's Parade, a 15-minute walk from Oldfield Park via the A367. Genuinely one of the better restaurants in Bath without qualification — the pho is proper stock, the banh mi at lunch is the right size, and the room does not take itself too seriously. Book for dinner; lunch on weekdays is easier.

There are two bakeries on Moorland Road that open before 8am on weekdays — early enough for breakfast before the train from Oldfield Park station (2 minutes up the road). Neither is a destination. Both are functional, fresh, and the reason the neighbourhood's commuters do not need to find a chain café.
