Thermae Bath Spa
Britain's only natural thermal spa. The same geothermal spring that fed the Roman Baths still rises at 46°C below Hot Bath Street; Thermae Bath Spa draws on it through a modern glass and Bath stone building opened in 2006. The rooftop pool — open-air, 33°C, looking directly onto the Roman Baths and Bath Abbey — is one of the better urban spa experiences in Britain. Tickets from £40 for two hours. Book in advance.

What to expect
Rooftop pool
The defining feature. An open-air thermal pool on the fourth floor with 360-degree views over Bath's skyline — the Roman Baths and Bath Abbey directly visible. The water is natural geothermal spring at 33–35°C year-round. This is the shot that appears in every piece of Bath tourism photography. In winter with mist over the city, it's one of the better urban spa experiences in Britain.
Minerva Bath (indoor)
The main indoor thermal pool with a circular shape and jets. Ground floor. Uses the same natural spring water as the rooftop. Larger and less crowded than the rooftop, particularly during peak weekend times. The better option for longer soaks without managing the rooftop crowd.
Cross Bath
A separate open-air historic bathing site 2 minutes' walk from the main spa building. The 18th-century Cross Bath is smaller, more intimate, and for adults only. Available for private hire or as part of some Thermae spa packages. Tick box for history: this bath is on the original Roman sacred spring circuit.
Steam rooms and wellness suite
Four themed steam rooms (Celestial Shower, Infrared Room, Herbal Steam Room, Ice Chamber) on floors 2 and 3. The wellness suite is available to all day visitors at no additional charge. The ice chamber is worth using before returning to the rooftop pool.
Spa treatments
Treatment rooms on floors 2 and 3. Massages, facials, body wraps, and the signature Watsu water therapy. Treatments are booked separately and add significantly to the session cost. Book treatments 2–4 weeks ahead in summer. The Watsu treatment (floating-assisted water therapy in the pool) is the signature and most distinct from what other UK spas offer.
Before you go
- Book in advance: Weekend sessions sell out. Book at least 48 hours ahead; 1–2 weeks for peak summer weekends. The spa website is the only booking channel — there's no phone booking.
- Best time to visit: The rooftop pool is most atmospheric in winter (misty city views), during rain (you're warm and the views are dramatic), and in the early evening from April to October. The busiest time is Saturday afternoon from 12:00–16:00.
- Towel and robe: Neither is included in the base entry price. Hire a towel (£5) and robe (£8) at reception, or bring your own. Bring flip-flops for the changing rooms.
- Mobile phones: Not permitted in pool areas. There are designated photography zones on the rooftop but they are small and often occupied. Leave your phone in the locker.
- Getting there: Hot Bath Street, Bath BA1 1SJ. 8-minute walk from Bath Spa station. 5-minute walk from the Roman Baths. No car park at the spa; use SouthGate or Charlotte Street car parks.
Stay near Thermae Bath Spa
The Gainsborough Bath Spa (on Beau Street, 3 minutes' walk) is the only Bath hotel with access to its own natural thermal spring pool — guests can use the thermal suite as part of their stay. Otherwise, most Bath city-centre hotels are within 10 minutes' walk.
